On the edge of the Amazon, Marajó Island celebrates the Rainha das Matas (Queen of the Forests) contest, which held its fourth edition in 2025. This year, the theme was “blue carbon: the importance of mangroves.” Featuring mostly trans women and gay men, the contest promotes discussions about the environment, gender diversity, and sexual orientation.
