Having dance parties at weekends and assigning good-looking female art troupe members and actors to dance with the chief executive was once a common phenomenon in mainland officialdom after 1949. This film records the tragic fate of two actors and couples in a cultural and industrial troupe of a military region, and their obedience and resistance to the political task of “serving the chief”.
